DVDs & Hi-Fi / Home Theatre
In addition to owning a modest collection of DVD's I had the dilemma that most people face of how to get Hi-Fi out of a surround sound (Home Theatre) setup.
This is often commented as being a mutually exclusive task in that surround sound systems rarely get close to relatively modest dedicated hi-fi when it comes to sound quality in stereo.
Whilst this is true to a large extent it is also true that surround amps are getting much better at stereo. My personal system, I think, does a pretty good stab at achieving this nirvana of Hi-Fi in both camps but it didn't come cheap.
I rate Linn Hi-Fi quite highly and have duplicated that reference material under the Linn link with permission.
If you care to individually rate my DVD's or comment on Hi-Fi/HT then email hodge-dvd@degobah.co.uk
and I'll eventually put up your views. Also please feel free to let me know if IMDB's ratings change as they are known to fluctuate as more people send in their reviews.
If you are buying DVD's then I recommend the following sites (all are free postage).
www.play.com (R2) and www.playusa.com
(R1) who are based in Jersey.
www.dvdplus.co.uk or www.dvd.co.uk (who only sell
Region 2)
There is also www.cdwow.com who are very competetive on prices and sell region 1,2 and 3.
www.dvdboxoffice.com who are Canadian and hence only sell Region 1. I suggest purchasing in CAN $ as
you'll get a better exchange rate than if you buy in US $. Also note that if you spend less than £18 you are not subject to import duty.
www.cd101.co.uk This is another site who are worth checking for prices although they are not always free postage - you need to check each time as it depends on what your buying.
They also are tied into Ipoints if you are interested in collecting them.
Lastly a great site for DVD reviews is www.michaeldvd.com.au.
This is, as you can see, an Australian site but since they use PAL like we do in the UK then they often get a version of the R2 release as their R4. It's a very
useful site to compare R1 & R2/4 DVD releases.
Alternatively here are some other review sites who are worth a look www.dvdbeaver.com,
www.dvdreview.com and dvdcompare.net
If you just want to look up a film then I suggest you try www.imdb.com
